For the past 16 years, Concourse House has provided shelter to homeless women and children. Located in the Bedford Park in the west Bronx, it’s a safe and friendly environment.
Concourse House was established in 1991. It’s staff and families have created a place where all are welcome. The Child Care Director, Delma Burgos, has worked at Concourse House for 15 years and is proud of the shelter’s successes. “I have seen how things have flourished and its positive psychological effects on the families,” she said.
The staff at Concourse House make sure the families residing at the shelter are in safe hands. As the enriching residential home is affiliated with Fordham Bedford Housing Corporation, it offers various resources and apartments for women. It has been recognized in local newspapers and television programs for its achievements in assisting with the transition of families into temporary housing.
Along with the children living at Concourse House, neighborhood children are given the opportunity to attend the day care program. “It is a way for the parents inside to help the parents outside,” Burgos said.
Concourse House and the local community (around 196th Street and the Grand Concourse) work closely together. Students from Lehman College, Hostos College, and Manhattan College, and high school students from St. Catherine’s Academy and Fordham Prep, often volunteer and intern at Concourse House. Doris Betances, a young college student, cheerfully admits that she enjoys her job as one of the day-care workers.
Each year, Concourse House entertains its families and surprises them with famous guests. In 2006, the rapper Nas paid a visit; in 2007, a well-known reggaeton singer by the name of Ivy Queen. During the last Christmas holiday, students from Academy of Mt. Saint Ursula presenting gifts and celebrated with the children living at Concourse House.
As Concourse House encourages the community to become involved, Burgos, the center director, invites all Bronx residents to a Multicultural Festival on April 11. Held at Bronx Community College, this celebration will include a Hawaii-themed performance by children attending the Concourse House Day Care Program.
